Best Books of 2016

the-book-deviantsAccording to Goodreads, I’ve officially read 70 books in the year of 2016! Not my best, but certainly not my worst! I’m also very happy to say that, in the latter half of the year, I read so many diverse reads that this list may have gotten long. This was also the year that I started this blog! I’ll try and keep my explanations short, but there’s no promise to a limit.

(These books aren’t necessarily published in 2016, but just books that I’ve read and enjoyed!)

Read very early in the year, I was blown away with this sci-fi masterpiece.

The Rose and the Thorn – Michael J. Sullivan
Huge fan of Sullivan’s Riyria Revelations, this book seriously killed me with it’s insight to Royce’s character.

Michael J. Sullivan
Another installment to Royce and Hadrian’s adventures! I also got some swag and a signed book plate!!!!

Assassin’s Apprentice – Robin Hobb
My friend had been prompting me to read this one forever, and finally I gave in. Sure glad I did!

After my untimely death after A Darker Shade of Magic, I wasn’t prepared for this book. Nor that ending.

Nimona – Noelle Stevenson
A short, cute book that seriously has me pining for friends to enemies to lovers trope.

Assassin’s Quest – Robin Hobb
After experiencing a slight disappointment with the second in this trilogy, I was happy to be blown away with this finale!

Age of Myth – Michael J. Sullivan
Having previously loved Sullivan’s Riyria collections, I was ecstatic to finally get my hands on his new series.

The Abyss Surrounds Us – Emily Skrutskie
Seriously. I need to explain this. Lesbians and sea monsters.

When the Moon Was Ours – Anna-Marie McLemore
Despite the thick langugage, McLemore still manages to entrance me completely with this beautiful, diverse tale.

Warbreaker – Brandon Sanderson
First the magic system mesmerized me. And then the characters. And then the story.

Unicorn Tracks – Julia Ember
I am still in awe of Julia Ember. I love her so much. Just . . . read her novels. Read it. Unicorns, POC, and lesbians. (Although I fancy one as Bi/Pan).

Thanks a Lot, John LeClair – Johanna Parkhurst
I loved how adorable this novel was, despite a few letdowns. Emmitt and Dusty were so cute, and I seriously loved the ending.

Dreadnought – April Daniels
#OwnVoices, trans superheroes. Fight me.

Ida – Alison Evans
This is legit the first book that I’ve read that has a character using the preferred pronouns they/them. And it really, really helped.

Between the World and Me – Ta-Nehisi Coates
Coates is a literary genius as well as highly educated in racism. He’s brilliant, and I felt very educated coming out of this novel.

What were some of your best books of 2016?

  1. I really need to pick up Michael J. Sullivan already. I feel like he’s been glaring at me from bookstores and my library for years.

And oh my goodness, I’m so excited for The Abyss Surrounds Us. I picked up a copy from the library yesterday, and can’t wait to dive in. Everything I’ve heard about it sounds amazing.

Actually, I need to read pretty much everything on this list. I’ll catch up one day. Thanks for sharing the recommendations!
