Review #135 // Hollywood and Vine (Faith #1) – Jody Houser

Faith, Volume 1: Hollywood & Vine

Faith Herbert, part of the Harbingers, sets out on her own, only to stumble into more trouble than what she was expecting to find.

Why this book?: I’d seen it, remembered hearing about it, and checked it out from the library on a whim.

This comic has proven that I probably shouldn’t read any superhero comics. Not because they’re bad, but because they more or less always include some reference, inclusion, etc, of other past superhero comic stories. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to have to read 5 other story lines to start the one that I actually want to read, just to understand what the hell is going on.

Hollywood and Vine is pretty interesting, if not generic. I got Superman vibes from Faith (Summer? Zephyr? IDK) with her disguise and her job, but jeez, much more than Superman was included in this one. First off, I don’t even know what her actual name is. Still don’t know. I thought the unique spin on the newspaper reporter was cute, but then it tied into the story more than I was expecting.

Basically, while I loved some of the references, others were unnecessary, and left me asking more questions. I loved that Faith was fat, and wasn’t afraid to flaunt it. I loved that it showed that she could be in a relationship with hot dudes and that she could do anything else she wanted, and that being fat didn’t stop her. I LOVED that.

But everything else was too confusing. Too weird (aliens?), too confusing (Summer? Zephyr? Faith? WHAT IS HER NAME), too vague.

Final Rating: ★★★☆☆

Overall?

It was too confusing. I loved most aspects of it, but everything else was just disappointing. It was a generic superhero line, with even more generic characters (except Faith/Zephyr/Summer. She was fun.)

Would I Recommend?

Probably not. Too confusing. Maybe if you’ve read the other comics with her?
